John Ashcroft has infringed on civil liberties with many
actions. From reviving the practice of racial profiling, to detaining
citizens and non-citizens alike indefinitely without charges, to entering
our homes without probable cause, John Ashcroft is a danger to democracy and
the Constitution.
Remove Ashcroft is a 527
organization focusing on the single issue of removing Attorney General
Ashcroft.
Only the man himself can say for certain, but I’m pretty sure that Attorney General John Ashcroft would disapprove of the Realdoll, a life-size $5,999 sex dummy that boasts "a completely articulated skeleton which allows for anatomically correct positioning." Nor, I imagine, would he have any kind words for the Extreme Bonk’er™ sex trapeze, the mango-scented Cum-Kleen personal wipes, or the thousands of hardcore videotapes and DVDs that are for sale here at the Adult Entertainment Expo, a bustling trade show for sexual entrepreneurs sponsored by the adult video trade magazine AVN in January at the Venetian Hotel in Las
Vegas." |

Since becoming the Attorney General, John Ashcroft has pursued policies that have divided the country.
Obscenity: For the first time in 10 years, the U.S. government is spending
millions to file charges across the country.
Ashcroft vs consent
his record shows. Ashcroft makes no excuses for his passionate views on abortion, decrying the politics of moderation. “I don’t apologize for being unyielding when I speak on behalf of a balanced budget or in opposition to big government or in favor of protecting the lives of unborn children,” he wrote in his 1999 autobiography

Ashcroft vs. consent
In a speech in 2002, Ashcroft made it clear that the Justice Department intends
to try. He said pornography "invades our homes persistently though the mail,
phone, VCR, cable TV and the Internet," and has "strewn its victims from coast
to coast."
Given the millions of dollars Americans are spending each month on adult cable
television, Internet sites and magazines and videos, many may see themselves not
as victims but as consumers, with an expectation of rights, choices and privacy.
Ashcroft, a religious man who does not drink alcohol or caffeine, smoke, gamble
or dance, and has fought unrelenting criticism that he has trod roughshod on
civil liberties in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, is taking on the porn
industry at a time when many experts say Americans are wary about government
intrusion into their lives."

"International: Ashcroft's Porn War
Joe Obenberger has been keeping an eye John Ashcrofts tirade against US porn.
The following was extracted from an article was published on www.avn.com
Joe Obenberger is a Chicago Loop lawyer concentrating in the law of free expression and liberty under the United States Constitution, and his firm has represented many owners, employees, and customers of adult-oriented businesses, both online and in the real world. He represents and provides advice to adult Websites in many parts of the United States and in Canada. His e-mail address is xxxlaw@execpc.com. His Website URL on the World Wide Web is www.xxxlaw.net.
TDOJ Officials at the National Cybercrime Law Conference
in Chicago: Major Online Initiative Against Adult Obscenity Imminent
I told the Montreal legal seminar attendees that, in the first week of May, I
had attended the National Cybercrime Law Conference at John Marshall Law
School in Chicago, a three-day seminar, promoted on its Website as follows:
"Hear the experts who are involved discuss where we have been, where we are,
and what the future may hold. Speakers include practicing experts from
government and industry who are making and enforcing the law today." That
turned out not to be much of an exaggeration. A significant number of
policy-forming officials from the highest ranks of the U.S. Department of
Justice spoke at the event together with representatives of the Federal Trade
Commission and the offices of several state attorneys general along with
various experts who do contract work for prosecutors at the national level.
The attendance was overpoweringly dominated by FBI agents, Assistant U.S.
Attorneys, and other prosecutorial and law enforcement personnel. It would be
inaccurate to say that no defense lawyers spoke, because two did, nor that
there were no defense lawyers in the audience, because there was at least a
scattering of them. However, the prosecution spirit was prevalent enough and
defense representation was scant enough that in the main, it simply would not
be unfair to call the event a prosecution seminar even though it was conducted
by a law school and open to lawyers in general. And, as a defense lawyer at
the forward edge of the battle area defending materials destined for online
publication, I surprisingly found myself in the midst of the anti-porn camp as
they at least indirectly discussed their order of battle in open discussion,
and more directly in smaller gatherings."
